Known as "Hamburg räumt auf" ("Hamburg Cleans-Up") this campaign is the biggest such event in Germany.
“Hamburg cleans-up!” is a 10-day annual city-wide volunteer clean-up campaign. All citizens of Hamburg are invited to help against littering in public places e. g. parks, playgrounds and other green spaces. This activity is aimed at encouraging public environmental engagement and the awareness of correct waste disposal. In 2017, “Hamburg cleans-up!” will be taking place for the 20th time, it has grown from an event with 7,200 volunteers in its first year (1998) to a clean-up classic with over 65,900 volunteers in 2016. Materials, such as gloves and garbage bags, are supplied free of charge by the Stadtreinigung Hamburg to all registered volunteers. Each registered initiative also has the chance of winning one of over 400 prizes, which are donated by local businesses.
